Am I a Candidate?

There are some simple medical criteria to determine if a patient is a candidate for weight loss surgery. The guidelines for Body Mass Index (BMI) are indicated below:

BMI Weight Status
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5-24.9 Normal
25.0-30.9 Overweight
31.0-40.0 Obese
40 and Above Morbidly Obese

Patients with a BMI of 40 or higher are considered morbidly obese, and are candidates for weight loss surgery. Patients with a BMI between 35 and 39.9 and who have at least one co-morbidity, such as Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, reflux disease, high cholesterol, or joint degeneration due to the pressure of extra weight, may also be candidates for surgery. For patients with BMI between 30 to 34.9, weight loss surgery can be an option, although these are considered on an individual basis. Attend a free seminar to consult with a physician and get more information on the qualifications.

Patients who qualify medically for weight loss surgery should also be prepared mentally to make the changes that are required to get the most out of the surgery. The surgery itself is one of many tools required for successful results. Patients must also be willing to make lifelong changes in diet and exercise regimens, as well as commit to post surgical follow up.
