Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve

In this procedure, a large vertical section of the stomach is cut away and removed from the body, and the remaining portion is stapled shut, leaving what looks like a long tube, or “sleeve”.

Food flows through the body in the normal digestive tract, however the amount of food that can be consumed is significantly reduced.

This is a permanent procedure that cannot be reversed or adjusted. However, there are no foreign body implants, and there is a reduced production of the hunger hormon ghrelin, resulting in more hunger control.

What types of Surgery Options are Available?

Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

During this procedure, the physcian staples a large portion of he stomach shut, leaving only a small portion open. The outlet from the small pouch is re-directed into the lower intestine, bypassing he noral digestive tract and lowering the amount of calores absorbed by the body. Generally speaking, compliant patients undergoing the Roux-en-Y procedure maintain a higher level of excess weight loss than patients undergoing restrictive procedures. However, this procedure is not reversible, and can result in lower absorption of some nutrients.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

During this procedure, the stomach is diided into two parts – a smaller portion and a larger portion – by insertion of a hollow band that is placed around the top part of the stomach. A port is placed underneath the skin that is attached to the band. The band can be periodically tightened through the port, and in so doing, restricts the funnel through which food flows o the smaller portion to the larger portion. Patients feel fuller faster, and this the mechanism which results in the loss of weight. The band can be tightened or loosened as needed, and can also be completely removed.

Because food passes through he normal digestive tract, food nutrients are fully absorbed by the body, so patients avoid the possible side effects of other weight loss procedures.

Featured Success Story

Cristina

We caught up with Cristina recently at one of her follow up appointments with Dr. Lloyd Steggeman, and asked her a few questions about her life after weight loss surgery.

What kind of surgery did you have and what made you decide to take the plunge? “I had the gastric bypass surgery, and I decided to have it so I could be around for my daughters, who are 5 and 10 years old. I wanted to see them grow older, and I knew I had to change something to better my health. I am glad I did it.”

What has been the biggest impact the surgery has had on your life? “The biggest impact is that I no longer have to take any medication for my high blood pressure, which I could never control, or for high cholesterol. I save money on prescriptions every month. And I can play with my daughters – they are happy, too!”
